  Estelí – Alternative Things to Do.

AN INCOMPARABLE LIST!

1.        Revolution museum of Heroes and Martyrs. Estelí's historical past.

2.        City of Murals, see work everywhere by Funarte, Dectown ultimate grafiti artists, other mural schools

3.        Visit the leather workshops of belts, boots and saddles near the south market

4.        Go to the outdoor grain and vegetable market at the south of the city

5.        Local Festivals; 16 July, Liberation Day, the Saints days, 14 September, and December for various local parties, carnivals and the Hipicos, the highlight of the year. See TreeHuggers for information.

6.        Visit the Casa de Cultura, chat to the Youth Network group, see the Corn Husk art workshop

Serving Suggestions;

7.        A must is to eat the filling Nacatamales (pork or chicken) & Veggie ones, both available in Café Luz

8.        Optional Eating suggestions!; Snake (Antojitos in Sta Cruz) or Iguana (Sopas de Carao) Soup

9.        Try any of the central fritangas (open air BBQ’s), great value and fresh

11.     Natural Medicine. Estelí is an international center of knowledge and practice. Visit Isnaya, buy their teas. Cecalli for their plants, books and treatments.

12.     Acupuncture , two fantastic and recommended doctors practice here.

14.     Yoga, at the Casa de Cultura most days

15.     Salsa and dance aerobics above the Fire Station Mon-Thurs. Great fun.

16.     Steam sauna and gym at Cecalli centre, Mon-Fri.

17.     Hire bikes to visit La Casita, freshly baked bread and cheeses in an oasis of plants and park.

18.     Visit a soccer game (Fútbol), Real Estelí are national champions no less

19.     Go to weekend baseball, Esteli won the championship in 2011!, or softball

20.     Join a local soccer game, ask any locals where to join up

21.     Swim at a local pool; Estelimar (due east), La Picardilla (south), La Campina (north)

22.     Hike up to Salto Estanzuela the waterfall, hike to other viewpoints around town.

23.     Dance the night away, Friday to Sunday on the south pan-American, to live music or cool disco. Try the hip Cigar Zone or Semaforos

24.     See the Mariachis on the pan-American drinking joints or at Don Pollo2 next to Luna International Hostel.

25.     Sing it out, at Karaoke, several fun places across Esteli; Be, Casino Las Vegas and more.

Good Intentions;

26.     Volunteer a day; at the Mujeres Ambientalistas, making recycled paper & craft products, or gardening with natural medicines and organic kitchen gardens

27.     Eat Organic. At Cafe Luz with their own produce. Visit the Friday morning market in Parque Central and support the La Garnacha from Tisey and Jinotega producers and FEM. Breads, lettuces, goats cheese, coffee

28.     Visit and support the women's organizations; FEM, Itxchen, Xilonem, Casa de la Mujer and many more

29.     Plan to volunteer in Esteli or Miraflor. Work with Luz Verde on  grass-roots projects, or we can refer you, for free, to alternative ventures in this NGO hotspot.
